Teaching Trailers - Film education questions

Voiceover: the script

(Grown Ups and Cop Out Trailer. )

1) what comments could you make on language choices, sentences structure and overall structure? what words and phrases particularly stand out, and why?

In grown ups the voice over starts with a time frame '1978', then it informs the audience that the best friends are getting back together after '30 years'. We already know that its a humour trailer which then will engage the audience to watch more as they'll be interested to know what they're going to do together.  Then the humorous dialogue comes on and then just when the characters change location the voice over comes on again and introduces the main characters who are very popular.

The Cop out straight away we see the generic conventions such as tall buildings, cars and guns. This tells the audience that it's an action film. Both of the trailers have a male narrator which could be conventional in any genre. As the trailer goes on we learn that its humorous too which  make both trailers similar.  The overall structure of both films is pretty much the same, they introduce the institution, show some clips, introduce the characters and then show the release date.

2) what repetition can you see between the two trailers, in terms of the vocabulary used and way sentences are structured?
 I can see that the narrators like to structure their words and always save the best till last such as the actors name and release date.

3) does there seem to be a formula for writing a trailer voiceover?
 It depends on the genre because different types of trailers use different formulas such as in a horror film  there's hardly in voice overs only when they're mentioning the release date and the film trailer. Most of the sound is just soundtrack or dialogue.

Purpose of a trailer;

1) what do you think are the major elements of a film marketing campaign- the different ways in which the films 'message' presented to potential audiences?
Different films will appeal to different types of audiences. So I think it's necessary that a trailer should try an appeal to majority of the different types of audiences which then will encourage people to watch the films so that it's successful in the box office.

2) Where might you expect to see each of the different parts of the marketing campaign?
 Perhaps through physical advertisement such as magazines and buses.

3) What factors make you want to go and see a film? How do you decide which films to see?
 Sometimes the trailer, posters or adverts are really good, they encourage the audience to see the film through various techniques. For example on posters they use film quotes release dates and pictures, which really appeals to audiences. If i'm having to choose between two films I would always choose the film that has the genre of my taste.

Distributing a trailer;

1) Where do you most commonly see film trailers? Is your experience the same as others in your class?
I see film trailers on Youtube and adverts, this is because i'm always on YouTube and secondly the TV at my house is always on therefore we always get a 30 second glimpse of a trailer.

 2) Do the different locations and different ways of viewing- online, in the cinema, on television or at the start of a rented DVD, for example- have different effects on the way you respond to a film trailer?
I think on TV's, trailers are sometimes missed because people just skip the adverts. However due to modern technology seeing trailers on TV is actually good because you get a sense of cinema world in your living room which then that feeling of excitement will encourage people to go and watch the film in cinemas.

3) The film trailers on Teaching Trailers secondary are all due to be released in the UK over the summer months. from what you have seen, why do you think the distributors have chosen this time of the year to release these films?
This could depend on the genre. If the genre is humour and romance drama then the films are released on summer because it sets the audiences mood.

4) What classification do you think each of the films on the trailer reel is?
All trailers are made for appropriate audiences no matter what the film genre is therefore I think the classification is 12+.
